Cleaners

|
In life typically people are stuck with jobs that they don't derive enough job satisfaction from. It may perhaps be due to the rising affluence of media and its ability to let users "see the greener pastures" of the world.

Admist this, there are of course, minimally, lone rangers whom find a job they like so much, they fight hard everyday protecting it.

One such good example is the Indian auntie cleaner of Block 68.

If any of you have lectures in early mornings at 68 you will no doubt see the vigilant cleaner studiously patrolling.... the toilets of block 68. She's like the keeper of the shrine, the dragon to the princess in some faraway castle.... with one sole aim in mind... to deny students entrance into the toilet.

" GO AWAY, CLEANING CLEANING! "

This is a typical response anyone will get when trying to trespass her sacred haven. For some reason, the toilets always cleaning and when she's around you the only place you get to pee is in your pants. Her shouts are almost like the rooster's call, sounding every Monday morning when I go to lecture.

Undoubtedly armed with the mop she will be there, shouting at students like they have tainted jesus's name with some great sin. Don't even think about trying to talk back, Its the part where she gets so defensive she starts scolding you and her face turns even blacker then black. (no pun or racism intended, puppy! arfarf!)

The terror dosent stop there.. it's like a Blair witch project thing, the scope has recently extended to the areas beyond the toilets. Just today, Mag&precy's class seemed to have some kind of presentation, as it was not their turn they were waiting outside the LT.

It didnt take long before the black widow appeared and blared so loudly we should change the production title to "BLARE witch project". What countless lecturers failed to do she accomplishes within seconds... make students listen. The class vanished so fast and quickly I swear they thought there was a fire in the block. You could almost see the satisfied smirk on her face when victory was hers, and she finally defended intruders into the territory.

Just as of now, blair bitch (typo) increased her poweress, by stomping into our lecture theatre. In my opinion, cleaners should never be allowed anywhere beyond places like toilet, garbage truck or sewage pipe unless being summoned by individuals to clean stuff like vomit. Did the aristocratic nature of the LT stop the blair witch? No.

She stormed in and screamed loudly.

" LECTURER NOT HERE, ALL GO OUT, YOU ALL NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE, LATER SUPERVISOR COME LOCK YOU OUT "

Typically if this was a BA, HMS or LSCT class I think they would have moved.

This is where SoE and FMS have advantage.... we are BO-CHUP.

Blair Witch (BW) continues to scream while everyone just invisibiliazes (new term) her. If we were in her territory, and you were to treat her like a ghost..... My first instinct is that a mop will come flying at your face. However, I think BW realised she could do no damage to us within the divine halls of the LT where her caste has been banished from, she left us alone. Did it end there? No.

Like all ghosts, banshees and screaming things, they have an ability known as HAUNTING. Every 5 minutes, she would pop her head into the LT and start screaming loudly again like her sons have all died, and hell broke loose. I began to wonder if the imaginary supervisor even existed, or that she was high on weed.

This went on, even until our lecturer came to start class, that was when she popped her head in, ready to unleash another barrage of vocal assault. Seeing the lecturer, her face distorted to a mixed reaction of shock and defeat, spelling a big letter "L" over the forehead. Realising the battle was lost, she retreated, grumbling some incantation that probably would make us choke on porridge. Our victory was a first, and clearly short-lived, as the demonic haunting of the BW will no doubt continue and reign supreme every Monday Morning when the sun would rise... and students would need to answer nature's call.

Vox Pops Chinaman

Just so you are clear, I am not racist. I just hate chinamen.

Today saw me in orchard walking around like crazy fool asking people what they thought of durian and alcohol.

Its ok to reject the interview, however, it is not ok to behave like a chinaman. This is what happens.

Me: "Hi, I'm doing my radio project, can I ask your views on ONE question?"
CM: "你说什么?这个是干什么的?" *points at my mic*

I realise comprehending my English might be rocket science for him. So I attempted to downgrade my IQ drastically, by like 500 points.

Me: "Er.. 我想访问你下关于个问题,那就是同时食用留连和酒有什么样的效果?"

Note here that this is probably the most complicated Chinese sentence I've constructed in my whole life. 17 years of my Chinese education was nurtured to perfect this question.

CM: "这个。。。现在是该讨论新加坡经济和发展的时间吧?到处人都没口饭吃而你还在这问留连和酒的关系?"

CM: "是应该讨论下如何扩大新加坡的人才和如何去喜迎外国人名来这发展经济。而不是讨论什么留连..."

At this point of time, I will admit I already was already clearly disengaged in the conversation, just merely nodding my head to make him feel comfortable. One should understand when an interviewer does that, its asking you to stfu and get lost.

However, does the china man know that?

No. He goes on this time adding more words I've never heard before in my life. He throws in a few badly enunciated words that sound like " WER PAMIT"and "BISA". He's like a Gatling gun, the more he talks the faster the rate of words spill out even though I clearly couldnt understand shit, but he was just rapping away trying like there was a word limit . I wanted to use my mic, hit him between the eyes and run off.

If you brought him to Sentosa, the merlion would be out of business. Saliva was just pouring out of his mouth as such a quick pace he would probably fill up a Olympic sized pool in seconds. The next thing you know hes criticizing the govt about work policies and unfair ethics. I did the best I could.... wait for him to stop for air then quicky say

" OK THANKS FOR YOUR TIME BYE! "

Wasted 2 minutes of my tape. Stewpid china men.

Thats like not the best. The china man continues to amaze me further....

As my group was interviewing others, we noticed the china man lurking around, approaching foreign expats. My first thesis was that he was trying to promote chairman mao, almost called the ISD to come tazer him. Fortunately most of the angmohs count give a damn about some guy who spoke like a duck and just shrugged him off.

My suspicions heightened when some angmohs stopped to talk to him. Clearly this is wrong. Someone who cannot pronounce your credit card company correctly obviously cannot speak to angmohs. And if he could.... why did he not do my interview? What did I do?

I stalked him.

Finally, I got so so so curious then I went to ask one of the angmohs whom he talked to. GUESS WHAT?

HE WAS ASKING THEM FOR MONEY. AND HE SPOKE IN ENGLISH.

I laughed so hard at him I swear he was staring back at me. To commemorate our successful CSI, my friend took a picture of him trying to suss money from some angmoh. Will post it later. Someone notify STOMP, " China beggar in orchard road? ".

Not i want say.. look at the way he stands....

Education Policy

Each time you step into a new module its always something different. However, it seems like every semester, schools always manage to stuff some shitty modules in for god-knows what reasons.

Enter news-writing.

Let's be clear. I'm quite ok with writing, in fact can consider to like it. Maybe sometimes its the lecturers that play determinant in your likings for the module. Or maybe its the current topic the module is on, leads writing just sounds plain nonsense to me.

A lead is supposed to be something that introduces the story, and the subject of lead writing is supposed to function as a springboard to catapult your story in a logical, coherent and interesting manner. While lecturers say 90% of the time is spent on a lead, reporters at SPH probably will tell you thats something that comes out of a bull's anus. They do their leads in like... 5 seconds?

The purpose of learning this specific style of lead is, according to them, internationally recognized standard, but if you ask me the only place I see it in is Straits Times. Seems like different papers have different writing styles, and this module is a express-pass to join SPH.

I think its time someone re-looked at the curriculum.

There's something I forgot to mention in the last post when she was mentioned. Besides telling us the golden truth about clouds, she introduced herself with the following, verbatim. ( Butterfly style, credit given )

" I'm well-known for being merciful "

For someone teaching others to write leads, I don't think this is a very good one either. Who the hell introduces themselves with that statement? Is it me, or are a few of you getting the "Guan Yin Ma" image in your head already? I somehow get general consensus that we'll be begging for mercy so perhaps she think it might be better to set things straight.

Actually, many other modules are outdated and usually do not bear much resemblance to the modern industry standard. There is actually a difference in theory and when you start work there. If practical-based learning is what is encouraged, "Sai-Kang", "Office Politics" & "Horse Fart" should make up 25 credit each for they are far more important then any other module.

There is reason to believe the only reason why schools are setup is to keep people out of jail, and some get the privilege free to encourage prompt participation. ( Brian, stop smiling as you read this )

If I had it my way, I'd revoke it back to the shifu-tudi style. Some people leave schools with degrees as ignorant as when they went it, and some modules exist just so that the central air-con does not go to waste.

Not that I have anything against the lecturer, it just happens to be one of a few modules where you listen just so that you will pass.

There is of course a decent probability one of my lecturers is reading this by now, so perhaps my GPA this sem will be down by at least 0.5

On a much happier note, today saw 3 hours spent mahjong-ing with jerome. I dont think I have to elaborate further why its a happy note. When I get elected government, I will make it a public holiday.
